Brief History of Presentations
As a very busy, dedicated vascular access surgeon working in Southeastern Michigan since 2000, I have spoken at many different kinds of venues about all kinds of topics, and to audiences ranging from dialysis technician students to surgeons, from medical billers to industry representatives.
But the most significant talks I give are to dialysis unit nurses and technicians, because that is where I feel I have the greatest chance of improving care to the dialysis patient, bridging the gap between the surgeon who creates and maintains the accesses, and the dialysis unit personnel who have to use them. Fostering understanding and common purpose are essential if things are to improve for our patients. I have given 33 of these talks to dialysis personnel since 2010, and everyone has agreed that the conversation and communication are valuable.
2016 Presentation Series
We resumed our series of dinner talks for dialysis professionals this year with “VA 2016 – Current Approaches to Access Problems”, covering issues relevant to problems patients experience in the units – infiltration, aneurysms, digital ischemia, hypovolemia, and others. The first two talks, at Andiamo’s Livonia May 19th, and at the Cascades Manor House in Jackson May 26th, were well attended, and well received. Our next presentation will be June 30th, at the Lapeer Country Club. Informational handouts are made available at the door on the way out at the end. Written feedback is requested of all participants. CEU credits are available.
